When I started my furniture making business 15 years ago, I was advised to take out income protection and business expenses insurance by my accountant, which I did. You never expect to use these things, but I broke my arm about 6 years ago, and I was very glad for the income whilst off work then.

In 2009 I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and got very sick. I had to close my business and without both policies covering both my income and the ongoing business expenses we as a family would by now be in real difficulties financially. The income has given me time to recover without constant worry about keeping the household provided for.

I'm hoping to re start my career later this year, but know that while I'm unable to work, I have income to provide for the family. It really has been money well spent.
